Every freediver hits the same wall. You've got the breath-hold. You've got the duck dive. You're relaxed, streamlined, sinking into the blue — and then your ears say no. That sharp pressure behind the eardrum that stops your descent cold. You pinch your nose harder, blow harder, and nothing happens. Or worse, something does and it hurts.
Equalization is probably the most important technical skill in freediving. It's the thing that limits most divers' depth more than lung capacity, fitness, or mental game. And yet it's the skill that gets the least structured training. Most people learn to "pop their ears" on an airplane and assume that's enough for the ocean.
It's not. Here's everything you need to know.
Why You Need to Equalize
Your body has several rigid, air-filled cavities — the middle ear spaces on either side of your head, your sinuses, and the air space inside your mask. As you descend, water pressure increases. Boyle's Law says that at constant temperature, the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure acting on it. For every 10 meters (33 feet) of seawater, pressure increases by one atmosphere.
The math is simple but the implications are dramatic:
- Surface (1 atm): Air spaces at 100% volume
- 10m / 33ft (2 atm): Air spaces compressed to 50% volume
- 20m / 66ft (3 atm): Air spaces at 33% volume
- 30m / 99ft (4 atm): Air spaces at 25% volume
Notice that the greatest proportional change happens in the first 10 meters — volume halves. This is why most equalization problems happen shallow, not deep. At La Jolla Shores, most of our diving happens between 10 and 25 meters. That's the range where solid technique makes the biggest difference.
When pressure compresses the air in your middle ear and you don't equalize, the eardrum bows inward. Blood vessels engorge. Fluid accumulates. Keep going and the tympanic membrane can perforate. This is a "squeeze" — barotrauma — and according to the Divers Alert Network (DAN), middle ear barotrauma accounts for roughly 40% of all diving injuries seen by dive medicine physicians.
You also need to equalize your mask. As the air space inside compresses, it creates suction against your face. A small exhale through your nose fixes this — but forget it and you'll surface with burst blood vessels around your eyes. It looks worse than it is, but it's entirely avoidable.
The Valsalva: Where Everyone Starts
Named for Antonio Maria Valsalva, the 17th-century Italian anatomist who originally described the technique for clearing pus from infected ears. Close your mouth, pinch your nose, gently blow. The increased pressure in your nasopharynx forces air up through the Eustachian tubes and into the middle ear spaces.
The Valsalva is intuitive. Most people can learn it in seconds. It's what scuba divers are taught on day one, and it works fine at shallow depths in an upright position.
For freediving, it has serious limitations:
It doesn't work well upside down. The Valsalva relies on your respiratory muscles — diaphragm and intercostals — to generate pressure. When you're head-down, the weight of your abdominal organs pushes on the diaphragm, making controlled pressure generation unreliable. Many freedivers find the Valsalva fails past 15-20 meters in a head-down position.
It requires increasing force at depth. As your lungs compress, there's less air available to push, and the compressed air takes more muscular effort to move. More force means more risk.
It can injure you. A hard Valsalva can generate enough pressure to damage the round window membrane of the inner ear, causing a perilymph fistula — a leak of inner ear fluid that can result in permanent hearing loss and vertigo. The round window is particularly vulnerable because pressure hits the oval window first, transmits through the cochlear fluid, and strikes the round window from the inside.
It burns oxygen. Engaging the large respiratory muscles consumes more oxygen than necessary. In a breath-hold discipline, efficiency matters.
In AIDA courses, the Valsalva is introduced in AIDA 1 (Discover Freediving) as a starting point. By AIDA 2, students begin transitioning to Frenzel. The Valsalva is a stepping stone, not a long-term technique.
The Frenzel: The Gold Standard
Hermann Frenzel was a Luftwaffe commander during WWII who taught this technique to Stuka dive bomber pilots experiencing rapid pressure changes during steep aerial dives. The technique was documented in German military aviation medicine and eventually adopted by the diving world.
The Frenzel uses your tongue as a piston to compress air in the nasopharynx and push it into the Eustachian tubes. It requires three simultaneous actions:
1. Close the glottis (throat lock). Your vocal cords close, sealing the airway and disconnecting the mouth and nasal cavity from the lungs entirely. It's the feeling at the start of a grunt, or the lock you make when lifting something heavy.
2. Position the soft palate. The soft palate separates your oral cavity from your nasal cavity. It needs to be positioned so air routes toward the Eustachian tubes when the tongue drives upward. Think "open to the nose."
3. Drive the tongue upward and backward. The back of the tongue — the root — drives up like a piston, compressing the air trapped between the closed glottis below and the nasopharynx above. The motion is similar to pronouncing a hard "K" or "T" sound, or the beginning of a swallow.
A single tongue-piston movement provides enough air for one equalization. To equalize again, you bring the tongue back down ("recharge"), allow a fresh volume of air into the oral cavity, and drive it up again. This recharge cycle is what eventually limits Frenzel at extreme depth — you run out of air in the mouth to compress.
Why Frenzel Is Superior
The advantages over Valsalva are significant:
- Works in any body position — including head-down. The tongue is a small muscle unaffected by gravity or body orientation.
- Far less effort. The energy expenditure of a tongue movement is negligible compared to engaging the diaphragm.
- Lower oxygen consumption. Critical advantage for breath-hold diving.
- Finer pressure control. The tongue can generate precise, gentle adjustments, dramatically reducing the risk of barotrauma.
- Works deeper — typically effective to 30-40 meters for most freedivers.
- Faster equalization rate. You can pump the tongue quickly for continuous equalization during descent.
Frenzel is the standard taught in AIDA 2 and beyond. It's what we teach at La Jolla Freedive Club courses as soon as students are ready. If you can only learn one equalization technique properly, make it this one.
Learning Frenzel: Practical Cues
Frenzel is notoriously difficult to teach through text because it involves muscles most people have never consciously controlled. Here are the cues that work for most students:
- The cheek test: Pinch your nose, puff your cheeks with air, close your throat, and push the air with your tongue. If your cheeks deflate and you feel pressure in your ears — that's Frenzel.
- The "K" drill: Say "Kuh" forcefully with your nose pinched. You should feel pressure in your ears. That tongue movement is the Frenzel piston.
- The water exercise: Take a small sip of water, tilt your head back, and move the water backward without swallowing. The tongue motion is similar to Frenzel's charge movement.
Adam Stern, widely recognized as one of the leading equalization specialists in freediving, emphasizes breaking equalization into component skills — isolating and training glottis control, soft palate control, and tongue mobility independently before combining them. His structured approach has helped hundreds of freedivers break through equalization plateaus.
Mouthfill: Going Deep
At approximately 30-40 meters, depending on individual anatomy and technique, the air in your mouth and nasopharynx becomes so compressed that the Frenzel charge can't grab enough volume to create a meaningful pressure differential. This is the equalization "wall" that caps many freedivers' depth progression.
The Mouthfill technique, formalized and popularized by Canadian freediver Eric Fattah in the early 2000s through the DeeperBlue forums, solves this problem.
How it works:
- At a predetermined depth (typically 25-35m, before standard Frenzel becomes difficult), perform a final, large charge — fill the mouth and cheeks completely with air from the lungs. Your cheeks puff out like a trumpet player.
- Close the glottis. It stays closed for the rest of the descent. No more air comes from the lungs.
- Use the tongue and cheek muscles (buccinator muscles) to push the stored air from the oral cavity into the Eustachian tubes in small, controlled doses.
- As depth increases, the air in your mouth compresses — but the volume needed for each equalization also decreases proportionally (Boyle's Law works in your favor here). A well-timed Mouthfill can carry you from 30m past 60m.
Mouthfill is advanced territory — AIDA 3 and beyond. It requires solid Frenzel mastery first. The timing of the charge is critical: too early and you waste the air, too late and you've already hit the wall. Many athletes practice Mouthfill inverted on land — hanging head-down off a bed or inversion table — to develop the technique before taking it to depth.
BTV: The Rare One
Béance Tubaire Volontaire — Voluntary Tubary Beance, or simply hands-free equalization. This is the ability to voluntarily open the Eustachian tubes by contracting the tensor veli palatini and levator veli palatini muscles — the same muscles that normally open your tubes when you swallow or yawn.
If you've ever been able to "click" your ears at will, or felt them equalize spontaneously during a yawn, you may have some degree of BTV capability. A small percentage of people can do this naturally. The advantages are obvious — zero effort, any position, continuous equalization, no hands needed.
The reality: even freedivers who can do BTV often find it unreliable under the stress of a deep dive or in cold water. Most competitive athletes who have BTV capability still use Frenzel or Mouthfill as their primary technique, keeping BTV as a supplement. Some instructors believe BTV can be trained through specific jaw, swallowing, and soft palate exercises, but there's no consensus.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
The Depth Wall
Everyone has one. The depth at which equalization fails — not because of anxiety or breath-hold, but because the technique hits its mechanical limit. For Valsalva users, that's often 15-20m. Frenzel users typically hit theirs around 30-40m. The fix isn't to push through it. The fix is to upgrade your technique.
Asymmetric Equalization
One ear pops easily, the other lags or refuses. This is common and usually caused by anatomical differences in Eustachian tube size or angle, a deviated septum, or unilateral congestion. Try tilting the difficult ear toward the surface to straighten that Eustachian tube, or turn your head during the equalization attempt. If it's chronic, see an ENT.
Cold Water and Congestion
Cold water — and La Jolla's water ranges from 55-72°F depending on season — can cause reactive mucosal swelling in the Eustachian tubes and sinuses. Many divers report more difficulty equalizing on the first few dives of a session before things "loosen up." Congestion from allergies or a cold makes equalization difficult or impossible. AIDA and DAN strongly advise against diving congested. And never use decongestants to force equalization — if the medication wears off at depth, you can experience a reverse block on ascent.
Reverse Blocks
The opposite problem: air expanding in the middle ear during ascent can't vent through swollen Eustachian tubes. Pressure builds behind the eardrum, pushing it outward. This causes sharp pain and sometimes vertigo. If it happens, slow your ascent. Swallow. Move your jaw. Do not Frenzel or Valsalva — that adds more pressure. DAN considers reverse blocks serious — rupture on ascent can allow cold water into the middle ear, causing caloric vertigo and disorientation underwater.
Drills You Can Do on Land
Equalization is one of the few freediving skills where dry training is directly transferable to the water. Here's a progression:
Isolate the Three Locks
- Glottis control: Practice holding your breath at the throat (not at the chest). Open and close the glottis deliberately. You should be able to hold a lung-full of air at the throat while relaxing your chest completely.
- Soft palate control: Alternate breathing through your nose and mouth without moving your jaw. The soft palate is the switch. Try fogging a mirror with your mouth open (soft palate open to mouth) then redirecting the air through your nose (soft palate open to nose). Learn to control the switch independently.
- Tongue piston: With nose pinched and glottis closed, practice the "K" and "T" movements. You should feel air pressure against your eardrums with each pump. Build speed and smoothness.
Inverted Practice
Lie on a bed with your head hanging over the edge. Practice Frenzel in this position. This is the single most effective dry drill for equalization — it simulates the head-down orientation of a freedive and immediately exposes any reliance on Valsalva mechanics. If you can Frenzel cleanly while inverted, you can Frenzel at depth.
The Otovent Method
The Otovent is a medical device — a small balloon attached to a nosepiece — originally designed by ENTs to treat Eustachian tube dysfunction. Place the nosepiece in one nostril, close the other, and inflate the balloon using nasal pressure. This builds awareness of the muscles involved in opening the Eustachian tubes and is useful for beginners who can't yet feel the Frenzel movement.
Pressure Feedback Tools
Devices like the EQ Tool provide a manometer (pressure gauge) connected to a nosepiece that measures the pressure you generate during Frenzel attempts. Visual feedback accelerates learning because you can see whether your technique is producing results. Some versions connect to smartphone apps for tracking progress over time.
The Daily Habit
Equalization improves with consistent practice. A few minutes of Frenzel drills daily — while driving, at your desk, before bed — builds the muscle memory and fine motor control that translates directly to easier dives. Ted Harty of Immersion Freediving emphasizes that most students who believe they "can't equalize" actually have a technique issue, not an anatomical one. It's trainable.
The Progression
Think of equalization techniques as levels, and they map directly to the AIDA certification progression:

Most recreational freedivers will spend their entire diving lives in the Frenzel zone. Master it and you'll have access to 90% of the diving La Jolla has to offer — the canyon walls, the kelp forests, the reef structure at 60-80 feet. That's where the good stuff is.
If you're stuck on Valsalva, the transition to Frenzel will be the single biggest upgrade to your diving. If you're already on Frenzel and chasing depth, Mouthfill opens the door to the next level. Either way, the path is the same: isolate the component skills, train them on land, and take them to the water.
Equalization isn't a talent you either have or you don't. It's a skill you build. And like every skill in freediving, it responds to consistent, deliberate practice.
